The One: Review

Another day, another YA series.

And to make it even better, another dystopian YA series.

I went into this book not entirely sure what to expect. The second book in The Selection Trilogy improved upon the first, upping the series's game when it came to action and intrigue. But, unfortunately, the third books in YA dystopian series have a tendency to be letdowns. (I'm looking at you, Allegiant.)

Quickie review? I enjoyed it. It's fun and it's cute, which are things that are normally not associated with dystopian books, but if you have read the first installments in this series, then you understand why I feel this way.

At the start of this book, you find America, the series's heroine, still competing in the Selection to win the heart of Prince Maxon. After an eye roll-inducing scene in which America tries to seduce Maxon using a skimpy dress and a false persona, the book picks up the pace and places her in the situation of becoming an advocate of political change in  Illéa.

Although I have gripes with America's character (Why didn't you tell Maxon about Aspen? Will you ever learn to calm down and trust Maxon?), during this book she is made to be more likable, and she begins to live up to her roll as a heroine.

And I have to give Cass credit for something major: this series was clearly thought through. She had a vision for the characters and where the plot was going, and this is clear in the writing. Sometimes this is lost in series (STILL LOOKING AT YOU, ALLEGIANT!), but The One wraps up plot lines nicely and leaves readers with a feeling of closure.

To be honest, I don't believe that this will be a series that is considered a literary masterpiece down the road. I do think it's a fun, satisfying read, though, and if you enjoyed the first two books in the trilogy, you will most definitely love this one!

I will talk to y'all soon!
